Collaborative project for Connecting Principle 07 with Will Schrimshaw and Cath Keay.
A matrix of speakers are set into a wooden box. The speakers are then covered with various combinations of fluids and other materials (such as resin and granite dust, clay and iron filings) which will gradually set over time. The materials are stimulated by the sound coming from beneath. This will result in patterns forming in the material reflecting a history of movement in the space, forming a constantly changing topography. Movement in the exhibition spaces is monitored by a variety of sensors causing sound to be triggered throughout the speaker matrix. Should the exhibition space be remain empty the system will output a single tone. Movement and intervention causes fluctuations in frequency and phase resulting in changes in the synthesized sound and increased excitation of the material.
